Electrical Design Services

Zech Engineering provides electrical system design for commercial and industrial projects. Whether it's a ground-up build, a renovation, a tenant improvement, or a design-build collaboration, we deliver practical, code-compliant designs that contractors can build from and inspectors will approve.

Every set of drawings is PE-stamped and sealed by Nick Zech, PE, with direct field experience in both design and construction.

Design Services

Power Distribution Design

Complete electrical power system layouts from the service entrance through branch circuits. We size transformers, switchgear, panelboards, feeders, and branch circuits per NEC requirements and coordinate with the serving utility on service design. New services, service upgrades, and equipment replacements all fall within scope.

Lighting Design

Interior and exterior illumination design meeting IES recommendations, energy code requirements per IECC and ASHRAE 90.1, and project goals. Includes lighting layouts, fixture schedules, circuiting, and control systems.

Panel Schedules and One-Line Diagrams

Detailed panel schedules, one-line diagrams, and electrical riser diagrams that clearly communicate the design to contractors and serve as the basis for permitting and construction. No assumptions left for the field to figure out.

Service Upgrades

Engineering evaluation and design for electrical service upgrades, covering increased capacity for facility expansions, equipment additions, or EV charging infrastructure. Includes utility coordination, equipment specification, and arc flash impact assessment on the existing system.

Tenant Build-Outs

Electrical design for commercial tenant improvements including office spaces, retail, restaurants, and medical offices. We work within existing building infrastructure to deliver cost-effective designs that meet the tenant's operational needs and local code requirements.

EV Charging Infrastructure Design

Electrical design for commercial and fleet EV charging installations. Covers load analysis, service capacity evaluation, conductor sizing for continuous DC loads, utility coordination, and permit-ready drawings. We've designed split-system DC fast charger installations for municipal fleet applications and commercial properties.

Design-Build Support

Electrical design support for contractors working in a design-build delivery model. We provide PE-stamped drawings, specifications, and engineering coordination so the contractor can price and build with confidence.

How We Approach Design Projects

Every project starts with understanding the goals, constraints, and budget. We produce construction-ready documents, not theoretical exercises. Our designs account for real-world conditions: equipment availability, contractor means and methods, and local code amendments.

We also coordinate with power systems analysis to verify that new designs integrate safely with existing infrastructure. Adding significant load to an existing facility without evaluating available fault current and equipment ratings is how projects create problems downstream. A short circuit study before design finalizes prevents those problems from showing up during construction or inspections.

For projects where an existing arc flash study is in place, we evaluate whether the design changes will affect incident energy levels and flag any equipment that may need updated labeling as a result.

What You Get

Every design project includes:

  • PE-stamped and sealed drawings, signed and sealed by a licensed Professional Engineer, ready for permit submission
  • Complete electrical drawings including one-line diagrams, panel schedules, floor plan layouts, riser diagrams, and details as required by the project scope
  • Specifications covering equipment requirements and installation requirements that protect the owner and give contractors clear guidance
  • Coordination documentation including utility coordination records, load calculations, and any power systems analysis performed as part of the project

Nick Zech, PE does the engineering and reviews every set before it goes out.

How Design and Safety Compliance Connect

New electrical design doesn't happen in a vacuum. Adding load, replacing equipment, or upgrading a service all affect the power system and by extension the arc flash hazard levels at every piece of equipment downstream.

We bring power systems analysis into the design process when it matters. If a project involves significant changes to the electrical system, we evaluate fault current, equipment ratings, and coordination as part of the design, not as an afterthought after construction is complete.

For facilities with an existing arc flash study, we assess whether design changes require a study update and scope that work alongside the design deliverables.
